The hallway often provides a link to all other rooms of a home but it is often the least thought of design element. Many homes are there where the hallways and passages are quite awkward – narrow, short, long, thin, or square. These areas often become a problem when it comes to decorating.

However, hallways and passages can be used to make a statement and set the tone for the décor of the rest of the home. These ideas can help if you have an awkward hallway:

Don’t Cram the Area

A much-trafficked area like the hallway may not work well with furniture. In addition, if the area is tiny, furniture will make it look just crammed. In this case, using floating shelves will keep the hallway clutter-free and make it appear more spacious. Keep the wall color and flooring similar to the neighboring rooms. It will create an illusion of space.

Make the Best Use of Space

If you have space under the stairs or an alcove, leaving it bare will make the hallway look dreary. The space below the stairs can be a good storage area. A chest of drawers along with a seating bench and a coat hanger will fit just fine there. If you have an alcove, have more storage by placing bulky furniture in it. In his way, you can make the awkward space more functional and useful.

Decorate the Walls

Decorating the walls is another way to cover the awkwardness of the hallway. Apply paint or wallpaper on the walls so that they coordinate with the rest of the home décor. In case of a large hallway, using deep colors will give the place certain warmth. Contrastingly, use a lighter color to open up the space if the hallway is small and narrow. High-gloss paint can also be used as it reflects light and makes a space look bigger.

Distract Visitors’ Attention

Displaying some gorgeous and antique furniture pieces in the hallway will distract the visitors’ attention from its architectural awkwardness. An antique chest of drawers, a vintage table, or an ornate mirror will serve as an eye-catching feature. On the other hand, such a gorgeous furniture piece placed against a simple wall will offer an interesting contrast too.
