Now we have to admit that as the years go by our collection of things multiply.  And most of the time we choose closets, spaces underneath the stairs, basements or -Attics.  Yet, have you ever thought of using your attic for more than just a storage unit?  Your attic may or may not be finished, but here are some ways that you can maximize the space within it so that it will add more to your home.

Determine if your attic can be a room:

Check your attic out.  If your attic has the finished off drywall then, whew then the job is half way done!  But, if you have some unfinished space then consider how you intend on cooling or heating the space, are there any leaks or types of moisture coming from the roof, and would you need extra ducts to run into the attic?  Do this before putting any drywall or insulation up.

Decide where an entrance and exit will go:

Most attics already have designated stairs that lead up to it, in which case they are called ‘Lofts.’  This will be a fortunate situation for you, because you would already have a access to it and be able to bring full sized furniture in to it.  If you need to break down the furniture piece by piece, due to having spiral stairs, a ladder or shorter tread stairs in order to get it up to the attic that is fine also.  Keep this in mind for children who are smaller, when they are trying to get in and out of the space.

Unlimited attic space ideas:

Your attic is your oyster and whatever you decide to do with it is completely possible.  For attics that are larger in size try using it more as a recreational room with open seating, video game areas, a pool table etc.  Or if you would like, consider putting in a bonus room that can be used as an extra bedroom, office, children’s play area and installing a connecting bathroom for the overall affect.

Install lighting to create a livable space:

The lighting within the attic will determine if it is a success or catastrophe.  Now if your attic has skylights, dormer windows, or windows that are operable then these are perfect for giving the natural daily light.  If the windows are not placed well within your attic then install solar tubes in the roof this will help to counteract against the harshness of the windows.  Also, make sure for any evening light you have, that it is hardwired into multiple corners of the space and has enough electrical outlets for lamps and other artificial lights.  Also, that there will be ample lighting around the stairs or ladder for getting around.

Utilize every space within your home even if they seem unusable.  If you haven’t thought of using your attic space as anything more than a storage closet then think again.  Reconstructing your attic can even add value to the square footage of your home if you were trying to sell it.  But just a quick reminder that switching up the attic can also switch up your energy costs by adding more.  Now, go and maximize your attic in a way you never thought of be inspired to go beyond!
