Off the wall shelving:
Opening shelving that is off of the wall can act as a display wall for accent pieces and collectibles within your home. The off the wall shelving forces the pieces that are on it to be seen and pushed out forward like a showcase model versus being hidden like when in a closed cabinet. For more balance, present the taller pieces in the back and the smaller ones towards the front.
Compartment spaces:
Compartment spaces are great for wanting to have storage and openness in areas that maybe more intimate (smaller). They helps to create better organization and a better detailed visual. Also, compartment spaces are great additions to your kid’s rooms. With the open compartments, it will help them learn responsibility and it will be easier for the children to keep their rooms clean and organized. Just remember use taller shelves for items adults can get and lower shelves for items they need or like.

Add color or just go all white:
Add color and brightest to the shelves to help add interest and variety to the space. Or perhaps you would like to keep it simple with the color of the shelves and just paint them all white. With the white paint you are able to bring the color in by use of the items that you place on the shelves; such as bright colored books or works of art it creates a similar illusion as the colored shelves would.
Let the light be your guide:
Play with artificial lighting to help enhance the appearance of the shelves. Instead of using solid material for the shelves try installing translucent shelving (frosted glass) with lighting underneath. Or perhaps, you have a window and want to bring out more of the natural light? Then install the open shelves in front of the window, which will create a feeling of an airy lightness within the space.
